And Onward into the Dog Days

The best we wildcrafters and gardeners can hope for is a rainy fall. I am trying to keep what little I have going at my home still alive. Its so hot and dry, that its important to water trees, or any newly established plants, (as of this year). My xeriscape is even getting watered.
I said byebye one by one to my food plants. I simply refuse to water everyday in such a bad drought. Instead, I am trying to support local farmers. What I find interesting from a wildcrafting perspecive, is what is doing well......or at least OK in this oppressive situation. The dear wild sunflowers are still going strong thru the drought, succulents and desert plants are of course fine(agave, cactus, desert willow) and foodwise it seems like my peppers and watermelon keeps on trucking, sending out runners here and there with minimal watering(3 times a week). I think its time to invest in shade cloth in case next year proves to be this dire.
Take notes and pray for rain. I am soon off to the mountains of New Mexico to remember how to be human and see if there are any of the wild stands I tend are offerring me up their goodness this year.
